About
Yunchieh Chang, a multidisciplinary artist and fashion designer, draws inspiration from the deep wells of Eastern philosophy and Zen wisdom, exploring the subconsciousness and the intricate patterns of human psychology, emotions, and behaviors. Chang uses Sumi ink as her primary medium, employing innovative methods and techniques in ink application, origami, and texture manipulation on various materials in her dimensional works. Through her conceptual approach, monochromatic palette, and minimalist interpretation, Chang's work is a sanctuary of tranquility, inviting viewers to delve into introspective moments and find refuge in solitude.
With countless stimuli around us occupying our awake moments, Chang intends to direct our attention inward, into our spiritual realm, dwell in inner peace, and view ourselves and our world through a new lens. A lens that is not influenced by artificial and societal values but evolves from introspection, contemplation, and reflection. The truth and realization that the present moment is all we have, with our short and only one life, is a constant reminder for Chang to continue evoking the calmness, contentedness, and serenity that resides in each of us through her works, to be immersed in the lasting peace that comes from this state of mind.
Chang graduated from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco with a BFA in Fashion Design in 2009. Her talent and dedication were recognized when she was awarded First Place in the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Scholarship in Womenwear Design. In 2011, Chang and her partner Dean Hutchinson founded a’bout, a women’s ready-to-wear atelier with aesthetics rooted in the classics and a forward yet refined interpretation suited for the modern intellect. In 2024, Chang was selected to participate in the Connecticut Women Artists’ Annual National Open Juried Exhibition at the Slater Memorial Museum in Norwich, CT, with two works from her Intuition Series: Intuition-2 and Intuition-3. Most recently, in 2025, Chang completed a commission project for Nobu Hotel in Toronto, Canada. Chang lives and works in Toronto, Canada.
Connecticut Women Artists’ Annual National Open Juried Exhibition at the Slater Memorial Museum in Norwich, CT。
